The Regent College Bookstore is delighted to host the launch of Dr. Shaun Ross' newest book, The Eucharist, Poetics, and Secularization from the Middle Ages to Milton (Oxford University Press, 2023).

Please join the author, his family, and friends to celebrate the publication of The Eucharist, Poetics, and Secularization from the Middle Ages to Milton. The evening will include food and drink, conversation, and a few readings of Renaissance poetry.

The Eucharist, Poetics, and Secularization from the Middle Ages to Milton explains the astonishing centrality of the eucharist to poets with a variety of denominational affiliations, writing on a range of subjects, across an extended period in literary history. Whether they are praying, thinking about politics, lamenting unrequited love, or telling fart jokes, late medieval and Renaissance English poets return again and again to the eucharist as a way of working out literary problems. Tracing this connection from the fourteenth through the seventeenth century, this book shows how controversies surrounding Holy Communion show up in poetry. Connecting medieval to Renaissance England, it presents a history of 'eucharistic poetics’ in the work of poets including Chaucer, John Donne, George Herbert, and John Milton.

Shaun Ross is an Associate Teaching Professor at the University of Toronto and a longtime patron of the Regent Bookstore.
